Death of Mr. John Kennedy.

The numerous friends of the above named gentleman in this county, learn with regret of his death, which occurred at his home in Smith county, Texas, which sad event occurred on the 18th ult. He died of congestion, superinduced by having his hand mangled in a cotton gin. Mr. Kennedy was born in Laurens county, S. C., on the 6th of May, 1828. With his parents he came to this county in 1837, where he resided until 1870, when he removed to Smith county, Texas. At the time of his death he was a member of the Baptist church, and the superintendent of the Sunday school of his church.

Mr. Kennedy was a brother of the late James Kennedy, our popular sheriff at the time of death, last February, and also of Mrs. Johnston, wife of Prof. Ronald Johnston, of this place, and of Thos. Kennedy, now of Atlanta. The deceased was one of our most popular citizens before going to Texas. We sympathize with his friends and relatives in this sad bereavement.

Mr. Kennedy leaves a family in Texas, and we hope they will find consolation for their great loss in the reflection that the deceased had lived a life that endeared him to all who knew him.
