Allatoona

On Sunday of last week, passed away literally the oldest inhabitant of the district, Mr. John M. Smith, who lacked but a few days of being 87 years of age.  He was born April 7th, 1817, on Fishing Creek, York, South Carolina.  From the iron region, he came to this county July 10, 1842, attracted by similar industries here, as had been his grandfather James, and his father, Henry Smith from those of Pennsylvania to those of the region of his nativity; where and by whom he had been reared to the collieries and mines as his favorite class of employment.  He settled near the old Allatoona Iron Works, and while in operation did their coaling; since that time he has been engaged mostly in farming.

Three or four years ago his health began to decline, and a month or two ago he was prostrated by a stroke of paralysis, under which he sank.  He bore unswervingly through all the years, the soubriquet, accorded by all who knew him of “Honest John.”  He left a large family of children and grandchildren, by whom he was well cared for in his declining years and last illness, and by whose hands he was committed to earth on Tuesday last in the “Johnny Smith Graveyard” where a church has been erected and a congregation has grown, his last home near that where he had resided so long.
