Infanticide.

For the past few months until Monday evening Amanda Stephens, a colored woman, has been occupying the shanty near the Episcopal church. It was evident that she was enceinte and would soon give birth to a child. She vacated the house on Monday morning and that evening Fannie Thomas moved into the same. On yesterday at 3 p. m. as Fannie was cleaning up the premises she went to the fire-place for the purpose of removing the ashes, when she discovered the charred remains of an infant. Amanda was immediately arrested and brought before Coroner Mull for the purpose of holding an inquest over the remains and examining her. She acknowledged being the mother of the child but stoutly denied being the destroyer of it. The jury, after examining several witness brought in a verdict “the child came to its death from the hands of its mother, Amanda Stephens.” She is now in jail.
