To the Public. A few days since I signed a petition asking the Governor not to release from imprisonment a penniless and friendless woman who is an orphan, now serving a sentence of six months in our county jail for keeping a disorderly house. I did not know at the time that she had a young, fatherless child, afflicted and helpless and another child, afflicted and idiotic. She disturbs no one who keeps away from her and does not infringe on her encroachments, and I ask for her pardon and release in the name of humanity, that she may go and sin no more. If we will persecute let the guiltless cast the first stone, remembering that as we slip, we slide along, or words to that effect. D. B. Mull |
