A negro baby was found dead

A negro baby was found dead near the Colored Baptist church in this city Sunday morning. It had been put into a hole in a nude state and dirt thrown in on it. It was found by some colored people, who at once informed the city marshal. A coroner’s jury was summoned and an inquest held. The child had the appearance of having lived a day or two, and the jury decided that it had been smothered.
